Parilio Hotel, Paros & Antiparos, Greece, Mediterranean

Parilio Hotel, Paros

Wonderfully located on the north-eastern coast of Paros, between stunning Kolympithres beach and the jewel town of Naoussa, Parilio is a 33 suite stylish retreat, characterised by the island’s traditional Cycladic architecture and timeless simplicity. Soothing earthy tones and organic materials blend seamlessly with a Greek contemporary design. Beautiful Paros is one of the lesser known Cycladic islands where the slow rhythm of Greek life prevails. For many years, a safely guarded summer secret for Greek locals, Paros has a beguiling charm which rewards all those who make the journey. It has so far resisted an international airport and getting there is all part of the experience. Accessible by ferry from neighbouring hot spot islands including Santorini and Mykonos, or via a domestic flight from Athens, Paros has long white beaches and pretty coves, interspersed with bougainvillea-dotted fishing villages, old monasteries and a friendly informal easy way of life.

A member of Design Hotels, the name Parilio is a fusion of Paros and Ilios – the Greek word for sun. Parilio's crisp lines, arched doorways and thick masonry are representative of traditional building techniques and help to create a soothing sense of space and sanctuary. Time seems to almost slow to a stop here - a serene setting to unwind, reboot and relax by the pool or head into nearby Naoussa with its narrow whitewashed lanes and vibrant harbourside fish restaurants (10 minutes by taxi).

Your days begin with throwing open your wooden shutters in the morning and end with a cocktail in hand while admiring a handsome sunset. In-between, Parilio's cross-shaped pool is its pretty focal point, shaded by two giant araucaria pines. The hotel's earthy tones reflect the surrounding landscape, while the simple design pays homage to the traditional homes and monasteries found on Paros.

Highlights

Sleep

For such a heavenly place to stay, it feels apt that every room type at Parilio bears a celestial name like Halo or Aurora.

Like the rest of the hotel, every room is light and airy with a particular focus on a neutral palette of colours: russets, ochres and beiges complement the porcelain floors extremely well. Greek authenticity is splashed across each room, too, from the mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings and the modernist art. Embroidered wall hangings are also found above the beds.

Being Parilio, any opportunity to introduce a splash of sunshine is heartily taken. Big windows mean it floods into every room, while private outdoor areas are generously sized: palm-studded terraces accompany ground-level rooms and those on the first floor boast balconies equipped with hot-tubs. North African ceramic urns and potted cacti are lovely extra touches. Predictably, the extra private pools are reserved for the Sun rooms themselves.
