Remote, wild and visually stunning, Bullo River is a half-million-acre working cattle station in the far north-west of the Northern Territory, offering a quintessential Australian Outback experience.
Arrive by helicopter from Kununurra or take the three-hour drive, taking in the extraordinary scale of the landscape before a warm welcome from hosts Daniel and Sarah. With horses, four-wheel drives, helicopters and a colourful crew of stockmen, a stay offers a fascinating insight into daily station life.
The Bullo River winds for more than 50 miles through a spectacular valley, surrounded by gorges, clear swimming holes, waterfalls, termite mounds and boab trees. Wildlife and birdlife abound, from crocodiles on the muddy riverbanks to the butterflies that give the river and station their name: ‘Bullo’ means butterfly in the local Aboriginal language.

Accommodation is provided in 12 comfortable, air-conditioned double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, housed in a separate building just 30 metres from the main homestead – and there is also a small swimming pool. Dinners are especially memorable – an informal affair served in the homestead, frequently including free-range prime beef and freshly-caught barramundi cooked in paperbark over hot coals.
