Ngorongoro, Serengeti & Zanzibar

The annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeest across the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the most enthralling game viewing spectacles on earth! If your wish is to try to witness this great natural wonder, then we highly recommend staying ‘under canvas’ in one of the Serengeti’s traditional mobile camps which move seasonally to keep up with the herds. One such expeditionary mobile camp is Nomad Tanzania’s Serengeti Safari Camp – the first mobile camp of its kind, specifically set up to offer a ‘migration-chasing’ adventure with your own private vehicle and guide to take you out into the midst of the action. This pioneering camp changes location every couple of months (but not during your actual stay) in an effort to ensure that you are as close as possible to the movement of the wildebeest migration. This is a million miles from camping as most people know it! But before heading to the Serengeti, enjoy 2 nights at Plantation Lodge in the Ngorongoro Highlands – the ideal base for exploring both Lake Manyara and the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater – and a great place to break your journey enroute to the Serengeti.

  • Days 1 & 2 - Plantation Lodge, Ngorongoro Highlands

Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport where you will be met by your private Nomad guide and escorted to your awaiting vehicle for the drive through the beautiful Lake Manyara National Park to the Ngorongoro Highlands. You will enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch enroute. Described by Hemingway as “the Garden of Eden”, Lake Manyara National Park is home to the legendary tree climbing lions and huge numbers of pink-hued flamingos. The Rift Valley escarpment provides a spectacular backdrop. Then on to the Ngorongoro Highlands where you will spend the next 2 nights at Plantation Lodge, a privately-owned lodge set within lush gardens and surrounded by coffee plantations.

During your stay, you can opt to visit a neighbouring coffee plantation to learn how coffee beans are treated or visit one of the adjacent farms to gain a fascinating insight into African country life. Most importantly, the lodge is the ideal base from which to explore and experience the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater – a Unesco World Heritage site where some 25,000 animals live.

Stay: 2 nights at Plantation Lodge

  • Days 3 & 4 - Serengeti Safari Camp, Serengeti

Head to Lake Manyara airport today* to join your morning flight to the Serengeti. Here, you will be met and transferred to Nomad’s Serengeti Safari Camp where your refuge is one of just 8 classic canvas East African safari tents with traditional ensuite bucket showers, new eco-flush toilets and hot and cold water on demand. At the end of each dramatic day on safari, you can return to camp for a hot shower followed by an ice-filled gin and tonic around a roaring campfire. Each day ends with dinner under the stars and evenings often linger long into the African night!

From December to April, the camp is set up on the southern Serengeti Plains to enable access to the main wildebeest herds (February is particularly fascinating as this is the calving season). Birding is also excellent at this time of year. In May, as the migration moves west and north, the camp moves to the central Serengeti Plains. Then in June, it moves to the Serengeti’s Western Corridor near Grumeti. From July to October, the camp is located in the northern Serengeti, close to the Mara River, offering great game viewing and sightings of the migration river crossings. By November, the camp starts to head south again, arriving on the southern Serengeti Plains by around mid-December.

*Note : from December to May, it should normally be possible to drive from Plantation Lodge to the Serengeti Safari Camp because the camp will be located on the southern and central Serengeti Plains (which is not too far to drive from the Ngorongoro Highlands).

Stay: 2 nights at Serengeti Safari Camp

A refreshing touch of boutique luxe in Zanzibar, Essque's contemporary African style is chic yet locally inspired, with Makuti thatched roofs throughout the resort.
