South Africa and Botswana: From Cape Town to the Kalahari

Follow in the Footsteps of David Attenborough and enjoy an exhilarating adventure in South Africa which will take you from Cape Town to the Kalahari for a close-up encounter with Africa’s amazing wildlife including colonies of curious meerkats.

This 7 night holiday begins with a 3 night stay in fashionable Cape Town before flying north to the rolling savannahs and endless dunes of the Kalahari for 4 nights at Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve ….. and there will also be an opportunity to enjoy a complimentary sleep-out experience under the Kalahari night sky!

Days 1-4 Cape Grace Hotel, Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town where you will be met and transferred by private chauffeur to the award-winning Cape Grace hotel which enjoys a superb location on a private quay in the centre of Cape Town’s vibrant V&A waterfront. Every one of the 120 rooms enjoys stunning views of either Table Mountain, the working harbour or the yacht marina. Not surprisingly, Cape Grace is a firm favourite for travellers to Cape Town, not least because of its exceptional personal service, its elegant re-fashioned Cape-influenced guest rooms and its diverse facilities which include a superb Spa and a complimentary chauffeur service to all locations within a six mile radius of the hotel. The beaches at trendy Camps Bay and Clifton are a ‘must’ and Cape Town also boasts an eclectic array of fashionable shops and excellent restaurants. We also recommend a day spent exploring the nearby acclaimed Cape Winelands where lunch on a working wine farm is highly recommended.

Stay: 3 nights at Cape Grace Hotel, bed & breakfast

  • Days 5-9 Tswalu Kalahari

Fly north to the rolling savannahs and endless dunes of the Kalahari today to see the desert black rhino, colonies of curious meerkats, the black-maned Kalahari lions and rare species of antelope such as roan, sable and tsessebe. Your destination is the malaria free Tswalu - South Africa's largest private game reserve, which spans an area of almost a quarter of a million acres. Your dedicated complement of field guides and butlers will ensure that each day is yours to spend as you wish …from a Champagne breakfast in bed or a leisurely spa treatment on your private deck overlooking the magnificence of the Kalahari to an exhilarating game drive with a gourmet picnic or a breath-taking hot air balloon flight over the endless savannahs. The Kalahari is also the ancestral home of the San bushmen and some of their ancient engravings can be seen at Tswalu – current research suggests that these may be amongst the oldest art on Earth.

Your luxurious suite or ‘legae’ (one of just eight suites) is made from desert sand, rock and thatch and each has an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, an outside shower with desert views, an open fireplace, separate dressing area, wireless internet and a private sun deck with stunning views of the Kalahari.

Tswalu is unique because it combines the typical Kalahari savannahs and sand dunes with the Korannaberg Mountains which provide a spectacular backdrop. The open habitat makes game viewing excellent and in addition, you can encounter game on a horse ride or walk as well as on a game drive in an open safari vehicle. Night walks, which uncover the magic of the Kalahari after sunset and even tracking of desert black rhino on foot by day, can be experienced. You will not only witness game that is seen in more traditional safari areas such as zebra, buffalo, giraffe and white rhino but you will also see rarer species of wildlife such as roan and sable antelope, tsessebe, hartmanns mountain zebra and the desert black rhino. The Kalahari grasslands also lend themselves to excellent cheetah viewing - and the Kalahari lions are famed for their size and beautiful manes. Perhaps most captivating of all, Tswalu's meerkat viewing is simply awe-inspiring. Tswalu has two colonies of meerkats that have grown to trust people and allow close approach and observation.

And your stay just wouldn’t be complete without a night under the Kalahari stars at Tswalu’s stunning and unique Malori sleep-out deck. Keen adventurers can even ride out to the deck on horseback!

Stay: 5 nights in a Suite at Tswalu, all inclusive, including game activities.
