Family Safari in South Africa with a Treehouse Sleep-out!

The nostalgia and excitement of a safari is magnified ten-fold when children are involved! Images of African wildlife, only previously seen on the pages of a bedtime storybook, come alive on safari – expect wide eyes and big smiles as you embark on your first game drive! There’s something truly special about capturing a child’s first sighting of a favourite animal, such as a giraffe, elephant or zebra – this moment is magical and the memories will be treasured forever. The raw unexpected African bush captures the heartstrings of even the most seasoned of travellers – and for kids, this whole new world is even more enchanting! What’s more, South Africa offers a choice of malaria free game reserves, perfect for first-time safari-goers. This African adventure combines two of our favourite family-friendly safari lodges – Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge and Marataba Safari Lodge, both of which are easily accessible by road or light aircraft from Johannesburg. Marataba even offers the chance for a unique sleep-out in a treehouse under the African stars! This is your opportunity for a true Lion King adventure!

  • South Africa - Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge

    Days 1 - 3 Madikwe

Arrive in Johannesburg on an overnight flight from the UK and join your road or light aircraft transfer into the African bush. Your destination is Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge, set in the malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve which borders Botswana. By road, the journey takes approximately 4 hours whilst by comparison, the exhilarating light aircraft flight only takes around an hour (be prepared to pack lightly in soft bags if you opt for the small aircraft!). The Madikwe is one of South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. Its wooded hills are home to an astonishing array of animals – including the Big Five and a healthy population of African wild dog (one of the continent’s most endangered creatures),

Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge is privately owned and run by the More family – a fourth-generation family business which owns and manages a private collection of luxury safari lodges in some of Southern Africa’s finest settings. Their guides, who are exceptionally well trained, are second-to-none and you and your children will benefit from their genuine and palpable passion for nature and the bush. Stay in one of Lelapa’s four Family Suites, all of which have an adjoining annexe with bunkbeds for children. ‘Lelapa’ means ‘family’ in Setswana and the lodge welcomes guests of all ages, with specially-planned children’s activities.

Kids go out in the bush spoor-casting to learn how to find and follow tracks (and make a mould of the tracks), paint their favourite animals on small rocks gathered during game drives, go scavenger hunting, roast marshmallows around the campfire and learn about bugs in the bush.

Stay 3 nights at Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge

The little known Marataba Game Reserve (one of South Africa’s well kept secrets) is a vast private wilderness where you can see Africa’s Big Five including a healthy population of the critically endangered black rhino, as well as abundant birdlife. You will also have the chance to do safari walks and water safaris by boat as well as game drives. Located in the awe-inspiring Marakele National Park, Marataba enjoys the stunningly spectacular backdrop of the Waterberg Mountains. Marataba Safari Lodge has 15 stylish stone and canvas tented suites including four Family Suites. This is wild African glamping at its best!
