New Zealand Great Walks

Known for its awe-inspiring scenery and spirit of adventure, New Zealand proudly offers 10 Great Walks showcasing the country’s diverse and utterly spectacular landscapes, from mountains and lakes to rivers and forests via beaches and hidden bays.

Enjoy these Great Walks as part of a guided trip with an expert at the helm, as well as hot showers and comfortable beds in private lodges (and less in your backpack!) or choose to head out at your own pace with your supplies and stay in huts with shared facilities and designated campsites. These tracks are very popular, especially in summer, so we recommend booking early!

North Island

Tongariro Northern Circuit

Nearest towns: Taupo, Turangi and Ohakune
In the heart of the north island, with volcanic landscapes, mountain views, glacial valleys, native beech forest, alpine meadows and emerald coloured lakes, this walk takes you past Mt Tongariro, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe. The Tongariro Northern Circuit includes one of the most popular day walks in New Zealand: the Tongariro Crossing.

Lake Waikaremoana

Nearest towns: Rotorua, Napier and Gisborne
Follow the shoreline of Lake Waikaremoana in the Te Ureweras between Hawke’s Bay and the Bay of Plenty. The walk takes you through rainforests, past waterfalls and along remote beaches, with breathtaking views from Panekire Bluff.
Duration: 3-4 days / Distance: 46 km

Whanganui Journey

Nearest towns: Whanganui and Ohakune
Hang up the hiking boots, this journey is all about canoeing and kayaking! Paddle along the Wanganui River through a landscape of remote hills and bush clad valleys. Take a break from the water on a short walk to the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’.
Duration: 3-5 days / Distance: 87 or 145 km

South Island

Abel Tasman Coast Track

Nearest towns: Nelson and Motueka
One of the most accessible Great Walks, this track takes in golden beaches, crystal clear waters and native coastal bush. Walk the whole track or you can choose to kayak or even water taxi between different locations for a more relaxing coastal experience.
Duration: 3-5 days / Distance: 60 km

Heaphy Track

Nearest towns: Nelson, Westport and Collingwood
Meander through dense rainforest, cross rivers and streams, spot native birds such as tui, kea, weka and even kiwi, before emerging onto the pristine palm-fringed coastline of the magnificent and dramatic West Coast.
Duration: 4-6 days / Distance: 78.4 km

Routeburn Track

Nearest towns: Queenstown, Glenorchy, Te Anau and Invercargill
Soak up impressive views of the Southern Alps’ glacier-carved valleys, stroll past majestic lakes and towering peaks as you explore the incredible alpine environment this region is so famous for!
Duration: 2-4 days / Distance: 32 km

Kepler Track

Nearest towns: Queenstown, Te Anau and Invercargill
This loop-walk travels from the shores of Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri across alpine tussock, lush forest and clear streams with snow-capped mountain views. Be sure to explore the Luxmore Caves along the way.
Duration: 3-4 days / Distance: 60 km

Milford Track

Nearest towns: Queenstown, Te Anau and Invercargill
One of NZ’s most famous walks, this takes you through the grandeur of rugged mountain peaks, sheer canyons and majestic waterfalls. Walk beside pristine rivers and in lush rainforest before crossing Mackinnon Pass and reaching spectacular Milford Sound.
Duration: 4 days / Distance: 53.5 km

Rakiura Track

Nearest town: Bluff and Oban
Located on Stewart Island, this is the most southerly Great Walk. Rakiura National Park covers 80% of the island and the Rakiura Track allows you to explore the golden sand beaches and forests of this remote, tranquil isle. Let the peaceful, idyllic surroundings soothe you as you soak up the sounds of the native birds, the bush and the waves.

Paparoa Track – New for 2019

Nearest towns: Greymouth and Punakaiki
Due to open in late 2019, the Paparoa Track will span alpine tops, limestone landscapes and lush rainforests in the remarkable West Coast wilderness and the Paparoa Ranges.
