Java, Borobodur, Volcanoes and Bali Beach

Spend a few nights exploring the highlights of Java before relaxing on an idyllic Bali beach at Belmond Jimbiran Puri, one of our favourite beach resorts with a lovely Balinese style. Java is an island of volcanoes, temples, rich culture and unspoilt scenery and is a great place to inject a taste of culture into your holiday to Indonesia.

  • Amanjiwo - Indonesia - Amanjiwo

    Day 1 – Prampanan & Ratu Boko

Fly to Yogyakarta via Singapore where yon arrival you will be greeted by our guides who will show you some highlights of the area before transferring to your hotel. Visit the 9th century Hindu temple compound of Prambanan Temple. This impressive collection of temples is dedicated to the Trimurti, a concept of Hinduism where by Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver and Shiva is the Destroyer, which is often referred to as the ‘Great Trinity’ or ‘Hindu Triad’. Identifiable by its towering and pointed architectural design, Prambanan was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991 and is the largest, as well the finest, Hindu temple complex in the country. Also visit Ratu Boko archaeological site. This former royal palace is situated on a plateau 196 metres above sea level and is noted for its fine views of the temples at Prambanan (which are located just 3km away) and also Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia.

Transfer to Magelang for check in and overnight at either Plataran Borobudur Resort or Amanjiwo.

Stay: 2 nights at Plataran Borobudur in a Wooden Chalet or at Amanjiwo in a Garden Suite, both including breakfast

  • Borobudur

Day 2 Borobudur Sunrise &; Candirejo Village

Setting out before sunrise, visit the stunning temple complex at Borobudur, one of South East Asia’s most impressive sites and the largest single Buddhist monument in the world. Receiving UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991, the monument consists of six square terraces topped by three circular ones. Two million stone blocks were required to build the temple and with at least 2,500 relief panels and more than 500 Buddha statues, it is exquisite beyond comparison.

Ample time will be dedicated to exploring this incredible Buddhist structure before heading to Candirejo, a peaceful village surrounded by plantations and lush scenery where you can learn about harvesting and other local activities. Getting to the village is part of the fun as you traverse the attractive countryside by traditional Dokar (horse-drawn buggy). Alternatively, you may choose to ride your own bicycle to and from the village.

  • Bromo

    Day 3 Mount Bromo

Ask your hotel for a packed breakfast today as it is an early start to catch the scenic train journey to Mount Bromo – it’s a long way and the total journey time is around 9 hours (but worth it). The train journey is comfortable but simple (similar to an overland journey in the UK) but you’ll be passing through some beautiful local countryside and this is a lovely way to see some of the country. The other option is to fly to Semarang and then transfer to Mount Bromo from there. The journey time is about the same.

On arrival at Mojokerto train station you will be met by our representative and driven in a private air-conditioned vehicle to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where a collection of volcanoes and its multifaceted surfaces makes for one of Java’s most iconic attractions. Jiwa Jawa Resort Bromo exists to match the natural beauty with a soulful service for those with an appreciation of beauty. Enjoy a breathtaking view from 2,000 metres above the sea level and have the remainder of the day at your own leisure. We recommend going to bed early tonight, as you will have a very early start tomorrow to see the famous sunrise over Mt. Bromo.

Stay: One night at Jiwa Jawa Bromo in a Deluxe Room including breakfast

  • Bromo

Day 4 – Mount Bromo Sunrise & Bali

With its huge crater and almost mystical-like scenery in all directions, Mount Bromo and its surrounds are stunning beyond question. Sunrise is the most magical time to view the entire Bromo landscape but this does involve a very early morning start of 3 am as you travel by private jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan in time for dawn. From here you will have the best views not only of Mount Bromo, but also Mount Batok and Mount Semeru. After (hopefully) witnessing a spectacular sunrise, you will return to your jeep and make the steep descent back down to the bottom of the volcano and then cross the Laotian Pasir (Sand Sea) to the base of Mount Bromo itself. The climb of approximately 250 steps (*) to the rim of the crater is definitely worth the effort and you will be rewarded with yet more incredible vistas.

Later return to your hotel for breakfast and then transfer to Surabaya Airport to catch your afternoon flight to Bali. On arrival transfer to the Belmond Jimbaran Puri.

Stay: 7 nights at Belmond Jimbaran Puri in a Garden Cottage including breakfast.

  • Day 5 – 10 – Bali

Spend the next 6 days enjoying Belmond Jimbaran Puri, a gorgeous Balinese retreat which enjoys a wonderful beachfront location on the Jimbaran Beach - here the nightlife is quieter that other areas of South Bali, with a few local bars and traditional fish restaurants. The style is relaxed, service friendly and welcoming; the design a nod to local traditions. Shady thatched roofs keep you cool in the heat of the day, whilst swathes of highly polished teak create a warm authentic vibe. Simply relax by the pool or head out into the countryside and explore some of Bali’s stunning jungle and scenery.

  • Day 11 – Home

Of course you can extend your time in Bali, perhaps with a few nights in Ubud or hop over to quieter Lombok. Otherwise transfer to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.

Prices start from £2,725 including international flights with Singapore Airlines, domestic flights from Java to Bali with Garuda, all transfers and touring as shown and accommodation as indicated. Upgrade from Plataran to Amanjiwo from £595 per person.
