Luang Say Cruise & Lodge, Laos
This two day cruise is a wonderfully relaxing way of travelling from northern Thailand, along the legendary Mekong River, to Luang Prabang through some of Laos’s most spectacular scenery. Travel by converted rice barge through remote areas of this mountainous region, stopping off to visit local villages on the way and sampling some delicious local food. You’ll break your journey half way at the Luang Say Lodge, simple but comfortable ensuite accommodation with a local welcome and lovely views down the valley.
You can either travel downstream, starting your trip with a night near Chiang Rai beforehand, alternatively travel upstream, however it is worth noting that the journey is approximately four hours longer this way. You will cross the border into Laos (linked to Thailand by bridge, all formalities will be arranged by the cruise operator and you’ll cross by a local coach), and transfer to the river, where you’ll board the boat and start cruising through this remote region. The boat itself is comfortable with various different seating areas and an open bar, meals are included and are served buffet style. Spend the night at a remote and simple Luang Say Lodge, soaking up the atmosphere before continuing on your river journey the following day, sopping at villages which cannot be reached by road and at the temple caves at Pak Ou, you will reach Luang Prabang just before sunset.
Luang Say Cruise & Lodge
The lodge offers wonderful views, a certain rustic charm and delicious cuisine. Overlooking the Mekong itself, it consists of 17 individual bungalows, constructed from solid wood, with rattan and bamboo decorations. Bungalows are connected by a series of wooden walkways, lit by lanterns at night. Rooms are fan-cooled, since the mountain air in this part of Laos is naturally temperate. All have private en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers, Western style toilets and mosquito nets to ensure suitable protection while you sleep. Best of all, the rooms have huge windows with shutters that can be fully opened, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking sight of sunrise over the Mekong from the moment you open your eyes.
The restaurant and terrace also have superb views of the Mekong River. Enjoy your first Beer Lao on the terrace at sunset before tasting some traditional Lao dishes at the restaurant. Don’t miss the lodge’s delicious ‘laab’ or minced chicken (or pork) salad. Of course, no Lao meal is complete without sticky rice.
Please note there is no cruise operation in June every year due to annual maintenance.
