La Residence Hue

La Résidence is the newest boutique hotel in Hue and is situated in the former residence of France’s envoy to Annam.

With clean lines and elegant architecture, this 1920’s building differs from other colonial era hotels with its more art deco feel combined with Chinese influences. At the heart of the hotel, the original mansion was where the Governor lived and is now home to La Résidence’s signature suites. Junior suites have different themes – from ancient Egypt to ornithology. The two colonial suites have either a river theme or an elegant Chinese theme.

Most rooms in the other wing have stunning views across the nearby Perfume River, whose banks are close to the hotel. Many rooms also have clear views of the imposing imperial Citadel itself, just across the river.

The 122 rooms themselves are furnished impeccably, a combination of colonial elegance and modern luxury. Rooms feature large draped four poster beds and ceramic free standing bath tubs which are reminiscent of the original era of the building. However the colours used are tastefully modern, an updated take on the bygone days. Warm ochre colours combine with elegant dark woods and art deco patterns. Vietnamese silks and dark woods complement the look. All rooms feature modern amenities such as air-conditioning and satellite television.

The hotel also features an outdoor saltwater swimming pool and a gymnasium, as well as a tennis court and a luxurious spa. The pool overlooks the Citadel and makes for a decadent place to spend an afternoon sunbathing. The spa offers relaxing massage, excellent after a day’s sightseeing.

Food is of crucial importance at this luxury property. Le Gouverneur Restaurant offers not only the excellent Hue cuisine you would expect, but is also pushing the boundaries of the normal Asian/Western hotel restaurant fare, creating delicious, unique and original fusion food.

Best of all, the hotel offers a fleet of bicycles which guests can use to explore the peaceful city of Hue. Join the locals on this, by far the most common method of transport in Hue, and cycle along the banks of the evocative Perfume River.
