This 69 acre private island in Port Vila Harbour, which was formerly the home of the British High Commissioner of the New Hebrides, today provides the setting for one of Vanuatu’s finest resorts. A 24 hour courtesy ferry runs ‘on demand’ from the island to the centre of Port Vila and takes just 3 minutes – thus providing the dual benefit of a private island resort combined with easy access to Port Vila’s fabulous restaurants (of which there are many!). With an expansion recently completed, Iririki now actually consists of two parts. Catering only for adults, the original resort lies at the northern tip of the island and is home to 70 free-standing, rustic, island-style fares (with a choice of Gardenview, Harbourview and Waterfront categories), as well as a small swimming pool, a pool-side bar, a spa and Michener’s Restaurant which enjoys breathtaking views of the harbour and township. In late 2006, the stylish ‘new face’ of Iririki was completed – bringing with it 54 brand-new, contemporary suites (which we highly recommend) with separate living and dining areas, a kitchenette, spa tub on the balcony and a choice of either ocean or pool views (the Deluxe Ocean View rooms offer the most privacy). Children are welcome in this new development, which also houses a large saltwater swimming pool, swim-up bar, restaurant, café and tennis courts. It is definitely worth taking the time to explore the rest of Efate – tours and car hire can easily be arranged. The transfer from the airport to the island takes just 20 minutes.
