Picturesque islands, stunning beaches, romantic resorts and a great choice of activities - Thailand's East Coast really does have something to offer every traveller.
The islands of Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao are probably the most well known destinations in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samui in particular has a huge choice of accommodation, a lively nightlife and plenty of things to see and do. Choose from cutting edge design hotels, colourful boutique options or large and luxurious resorts.
Koh Pha Ngan attracts more of a backpacker crowd, thanks to its renowned party scene and cheap accommodation. Koh Tao boast some of Thailand's best diving and although not yet as developed as Samui, still offers one or two decent accommodation options.
Weather-wise, the Gulf islands are unique in Thailand in that their rainy season lasts from November until January. The summer months are a good time of year to travel here, although you may experience the odd late afternoon shower.
On Thailand's far East coast, the island of Koh Chang is becoming an increasingly popular option. New hotels are being built all the time although the overwhelming vibe of Koh Chang is still smaller, boutique properties.
The island of Koh Samet is the nearest island to Bangkok and makes for a convenient escape from the city. As such, it is busy on weekends and popular with local people as well as tourists. There are one or two small boutique options which make for a great stay.
Possibly the most convenient beaches to reach from Bangkok itself are Hua Hin and nearby Pranburi, as they are only three hours' drive South of the city. Hua Hin is the preferred beach destination of Thailand
