This distinctly stylish new camp, which is set just outside the boundaries of the Serengeti National Park in the Loliondo area, has been uniquely designed to celebrate the nomadic cultures from around the world – the Mongolian Gers or Yurts, the Navajo Tepees and Tanzania’s own Maasai Bomas. The result of this heady mix of cultures, style, comfort and wilderness is an amazingly chic safari camp – unlike any other in Africa. The camp has six large ‘yurts’, as well as a dining yurt – and separate lounge and library yurt. Each of the accommodation yurts has its own ensuite bathroom, with traditional safari bucket shower and toilet. Each also has an open ‘wheel’ in the centre of the roof (covered at night) which helps to keep the yurt both open and airy. Semi-nomadic, likes its counter-parts in Tarangire and the Serengeti, the camp moves seasonally, spending six months in southern Loliondo (Piyaya) and six months in northern Loliondo (Ololoswan). Located in Maasai ancestral lands in the northern part of Tanzania (with Kenya’s Maasai Mara to the north, the Serengeti to the west and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the south), the Loliondo Maasai concession area spans an estimated 4,000 square kilometres (roughly a third of the size of the Serengeti). Given that there is no actual physical boundary with the Serengeti, the eco-system naturally extends into the Loliondo –and the landscape is simply stunning – with dramatic rock kopjes, woodlands, acacia-lined watercourses and grassy plains. This is excellent walking country and whilst game drives remain a feature, the emphasis here is on walking safaris, night drives (neither of which are possible within the Serengeti itself) – and cultural visits to the local Maasai village communities.
