The Zanzibar Serena Inn is a haven of tranquillity set amidst the exotic bustle of Zanzibar and washed by the aquamarine waters of the Zanzibar channel. Adorned with arched alcoves, antique plates and brass lamps each of the 51 calm white rooms is based on the traditional design of a Swahili house - and all feature traditional carved furniture, cool ceramics, draped beds and louvre doors which open out onto wrought-iron balconies overlooking the Persian-bath pool and azure bay. The Serena’s Baharia Restaurant - which serves a glorious mix of freshly caught seafood, handpicked spices and delicately flavoured vegetables - is so carefully positioned that the waves lap within inches of its open windows and the lateen-sailed dhows pass 'within' metres from its tables.
