This stylish beach lodge is so-named after its stunning location on Zanzibar’s north-east coast. This ‘less-travelled’ part of the island is known as Matemwe and is renowned for its pristine stretches of deserted white sand and turquoise Indian Ocean waters – not to mention the spectacular Mnemba Atoll, just off-shore, which is perfect for snorkelling and diving. The gorgeous beaches north and south of the lodge are shared only with the occasional fishermen unloading their catch of the day. Renowned for its friendly staff and relaxed laidback atmosphere, Matemwe offers 12 spacious bungalows, built from local materials – each with a kingsize bed, an extra single bed and a private verandah with hammocks and couches overlooking the ocean. Striking a balance between beachside simplicity and rustic elegance, Matemwe prides itself on its ethos of low impact eco-tourism – and enjoys a close relationship with the neighbouring village of Kigomani – whose village school has benefited from Matemwe's financial support. Not surprisingly, seafood is the speciality of the intimate open-air restaurant which looks out over the glistening water. The fishermen come ashore daily with fresh crab and lobster – and all other produce is bought daily from the local markets.
