Located in the Tuamotus, Rangiroa (from Ra’iroa, literally meaning ‘huge sky’) gets its name from its great length, measuring 75kms from east to west and 25kms from north to south. It is the largest atoll of Tahiti and Her Islands and boasts an immense turquoise lagoon dotted with tiny islets (motus) encircled in a reef crown. There’s little wonder that Rangiroa has established itself as one of the most famous dive sites in the world. It also harbours a place where ‘paradise’ has indeed become a reality – Kia Ora Sauvage. Hidden away on an idyllic private motu on the south side of Rangiroa’s magnificent lagoon, five delightfully rustic beach bungalows built from ironwood, woven palms and bamboo make up this little piece of heaven. There are no phones or electricity – just coconut palms, hammocks and pristine white sands. Kia Ora Sauvage provides the quintessential 'castaway island' escape and is available to only a few privileged guests (maximum 10 at any one time) who wish to experience authentic Polynesia in one of its most breathtaking and remote settings. This is a place where you will get up with the sunrise. Your hosts will take you fishing to the reef to collect seafood for dinner and you will eat by the light of a kerosene lamp on the beach or around the large communal table in the restaurant area. There is also a bar. You can snorkel on the miles of reef, canoe to neighbouring islands with a picnic, look for dolphins and sharks or simply relax in your hammock and do nothing at all! This promises to be the ultimate ‘Robinson Crusoe’ adventure but without the hardships! Kia Ora Sauvage is also available for exclusive private use for those who really want to ‘get away from it all’ on their own private island. Rangiroa is just an hour’s flight from Tahiti and access to Kia Ora Sauvage is via a one hour cruise across the lagoon from its sister hotel, Hotel Kia Ora. The boat transfer departs daily from Hotel Kia Ora at 9am so you will need to overnight at Hotel Kia Ora beforehand. The return boat from Kia Ora Sauvage departs at 11am daily. Hotel Kia Ora is a relaxed bungalow style resort set on a beautiful white sandy beach on the northern shore of the atoll, just 5 minutes from the airport. It offers a choice of garden, beach and overwater bungalows and there is also a charming overwater bar and open-air restaurant - the perfect vantage point from which to admire Rangiroa’s breathtaking sunsets!
