The ‘grande dame’ of Bora Bora’s hotel scene (and the first hotel in Bora Bora to introduce overwater bungalows), this acclaimed romantic retreat has been ‘wooing’ many a famous name since it first opened in 1961. Today, the spell-binding charm and legendary discreet personal service of Hotel Bora Bora is still the same - but it is now an exclusive Amanresort - offering 54 elegant Polynesian-style bungalows with rattan and bamboo furniture, Tasmanian oak floors and cast iron claw foot baths. The extensive use of neutral colours and natural light draws the vivid blues of the lagoon into every room. All the accommodation has air-conditioning with overhead fans, and all the ensuites have a separate shower and bath.

The superior bungalows are located on the beachfront - and each has a spacious bedroom, bathroom and living area, a small patio facing the lagoon and a hammock nearby to enjoy the sea breezes. The 15 overwater bungalows feature a kingsize four-poster bed, a clawfoot bath and a split-level teak sundeck with steps leading down to the lagoon. Set back in the tropical gardens, the 12 unique pool farés (faré is the Tahitian word for home) boast a small outdoor private swimming pool and a sun pavilion, enclosed by a walled rock garden for added privacy. But most secluded and spacious of all - the 5 premium beach farés enjoy a prime beach location - each one has a kingsize four-poster bed, a sitting room, bathroom and a large sundeck.

The intimate Matira Terrace Restaurant overlooks the lagoon and the adjacent open-air bar is the perfect spot for drinks at sunset. There is also a beach bar - and a weekly highlight is the beach barbecue with traditional singing and dancing.

In true Bora Bora style, most activities are lagoon-based including snorkelling, fishing, glass bottom boat rides, jet skiing and shark feeding - but it’s also worth going exploring around the island. You can hire a car, a scooter or even a bicycle - or you can join a jeep safari.

Hotel Bora Bora is located on Point Raititi at the southern end of the main island of Bora Bora - and access from the airport is via a 20 minute boat ride across the lagoon in the hotel’s private launch.
