The diverse Eastern Cape landscape ranges from the dry desolate Great Karoo to the steamy forests of the Wild Coast and the Keiskamma Valley – and the shoreline extends from the Umtamvuna River in KwaZulu-Natal, to the Storms River mouth on the scenic Garden Route. The Eastern Cape offers 800km of untouched and pristine coastline along with some of the finest beaches. Port Elizabeth is an industrial sprawl of auto factories and rubber plants but it is worth venturing into the centre, time permitting, to grab a dose of urban culture before you venture inland to the game parks. The main attraction is the 40km stretch of sandy coastline which starts right in the city and line Algoa Bay. Whether you are visiting a private game reserve or the Addo Elephant National Park, the Eastern Cape offers unequalled game viewing, which is now serious competition to the Kruger, and without the malaria risk.
