This stunning lodge celebrates the rich culture of the Zulu people. Set just north of Hluhluwe in northern KwaZulu-Natal, with the warm waters of the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay merely an hour away, Thanda is a unique ‘bush and beach’ destination where you can combine Big Five game viewing with the exhilaration of horse-riding along sun-drenched sands – and even whale watching (between July - November). The main lodge comprises nine sprawling bush villas (picture 1) which epitomise ‘stylish living’ in the very midst of the bush! Each has an expansive wooden viewing deck, a heated plunge pool, a spacious bedroom and living area, a four-poster bed draped in soft rustling fabrics, a luxurious bathroom with freestanding bathtub and both an indoor and outdoor shower – plus a thatched sala complete with indulgent feather-filled cushions – perfect for an afternoon siesta! The pièce de résistance however, just has to be the individual private bomas where you can enjoy intimate alfresco dining under the African stars! Thanda also has a Tented Camp with four classic safari tents offering a more ‘traditional-yet-refined’ bush experience. Thanda means ‘love’ in the Zulu language – and there’s certainly no shortage of romance at this decadent hideaway! Game drives and bush walks with knowledgeable trackers are all part of the experience – but in addition, the 21 different eco-systems of the nearby ‘Elephant Coast’ offer a wealth of water-based activities including snorkelling, diving, fishing and midnight turtle tours… and at the end of an invigorating day, a visit to Thanda’s exclusive Wellness Centre is guaranteed to soothe your soul!
