Overlooking the world-famous Walker Bay,Grootbos is a wonderful wilderness retreat hidden in a private Eden with over 650 indigenous plant species and one of the largest Milkwood forests in the world. Situated less than two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos offers an invigorating eco-marine escape amidst breathtaking scenery and with spectacular views of the surrounding dunes, the sea and distant Cape of Good Hope. Owned and managed by the energetic Lutzeyer brothers and a knowledgeable team of conservationists, your days here will be filled with adventure and warm hospitality.

Characterised by spaciousness and supreme comfort, the classic Garden Lodge consists of 11 generous stone and wood cabins connected by winding pathways. Stylishly decorated with strong African accents, each suite features an ensuite bathroom, separate living room, cosy wood-burning stove and an outdoor wooden deck with a view of the ocean through rustling branches. Families especially adore the 2 bedroom cottages and an inspiring children’s programme will keep ‘little-ones’ enthused for hours.

For the ultimate indulgence, Grootbos' newly-opened Forest Lodge (pictured above) provides a decadent and contemporary forest retreat for discerning romantic couples. Each of the individual luxury suites is discreetly hidden amongst the foliage and spills out onto an expansive wooden deck with captivating ocean views. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls create a sense of light and space – and there are no telephones –you are encouraged to leave the outside world behind!

Also central to the Grootbos experience is the fabulous cuisine. Seafood straight from the ocean, along with fresh vegetables and herbs from the lodge’s garden, feature strongly on the menu –and naturally, these are complemented by a selection of fine local wines.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is home to a magnificent variety of plants and animals, and it also enjoys close proximity to a pristine coastline with secluded swimming areas, tidal rock pools, white sandy beaches and archaeological caves. The wildflowers and stunning landscapes can be explored on foot by following one of the many self-guided nature trails, or by joining a specialist guide. Other activities, which can be tailored to your individual requirements, include four-wheel drive excursions and horse-riding. A boat trip to nearby Dyer Island offers a ‘never-to-be- forgotten’ maritime encounter with whales (June to mid-December), sharks, seal colonies, penguins and a host of other different seabirds (additional cost). And for a truly unique experience, we highly recommend a scenic flight over the rocky coastline from Cape Agulhas to Cape Hangklip to view the majestic whales from above!

Ranked amongst Tatler’s 101 Best Hotels and the overall winner in Tatler’s Best Family Hotel in the World category 2006, Grootbos is a true nature lover's paradise, suitable for all age groups!
