North Island

Uninhabited for over 30 years, the ethos behind the creation of this acclaimed eco-tourism hideaway (which is just 2.5kms long and 1km wide) is to turn the environmental clock back 200 years through the rehabilitation and gradual re-introduction of many of the endangered Seychelles species. The clean air, overwhelming scenery and four breathtaking beaches (one at each point of the compass – and one sheltered for each season) will reinvigorate your body and soul – whilst the island’s natural habitat benefits from a unique ‘Noah’s Ark’ conservation programme.

Ever since its opening, the fabulously intimate, unashamedly beautiful North Island has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards – including more recently being listed by the Condé Nast Traveller Readers Awards in 2008 as the 18th best in the ‘World’s Top 100’ category. This is a place where indulgence, seclusion and rejuvenation take on a new meaning. There are five members of staff to each guest – and your every wish will be attended to by your very own ‘Man Friday’.

Your villa (one of only 11 guest villas in total) is your refuge – a highly imaginative composition of lovingly handcrafted wood, local stone and glass with a thatched roof – separated into different areas for eating, relaxing, sleeping, stargazing and of course, pampering – ‘in-villa’ treatments are just part of the course! Sunken baths, indoor and outdoor showers, day-beds in muslin-draped gazebos, slatted wooden decks leading to a private plunge pool, direct beach access to the ‘softest of soft’ white sand – and more space and seclusion than you could ever imagine.

The 45 metre infinity-edge swimming pool nestles in a granite outcrop – and above the pool, North Island’s invigorating Spa overlooks the azure ocean. Jungle trails, diving, fishing, snorkelling, sea kayaking and mountain biking will easily fill your days – and there is even a gym!

The cuisine is light, fresh, healthy and ‘herby’ – a combination of the day’s fish catch with the fruit, vegetables and spices grown on the island. Defying convention, there is no menu – simply a conversation about your preferences with the chef. This unique culinary experience is complemented by an impressive wine cellar which showcases some of the world’s best wines.

The natural focal point is the Island Piazza where elegant buildings cluster around a magnificent Indian Almond tree – whilst the wonderful sunset bar, tucked away on the island’s western beach, is a great spot for private barefoot dinners. North Island is accessible via an exhilarating 15 minute helicopter flight north-west of Mahé.
