Secluded, serene and wonderfully remote, this boutique, eco-style coastal retreat sits in the heart of the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island. The lodge – which nestles in native bush just a short walk from the golden sands and sparkling turquoise waters of Awaroa Bay – has been widely acclaimed for the discreet way in which it blends in with its pristine surroundings. There are 26 rooms in total – but we highly recommend one of the 12 contemporary-style Superior Studio Suites which boast a private deck overlooking the surrounding bush and wetlands. This is the perfect base for walking and sea kayaking the ‘Abel Tasman’ – kayak hire and guided walks are available from the lodge – but equally, there are a number of beautiful walking trails which enable you to explore the stunning coastline and untouched forest at your leisure. After a full day’s activities, you can look forward to the creative menu and regional wines at the Awaroa Lodge Café where succulent local produce including seafood and organic greens from the vegetable garden are the ‘order of the day’. Access is via a 20 – 30 minute spectacular light aircraft or helicopter flight from Nelson or a scenic boat ride from Marahau (1 hour) or Nelson (21/2 hours). Alternatively, you can now also charter a catamaran for a leisurely one-way transfer to or from the lodge with an opportunity for some scenic exploring along the way.
