The only place outside Argentina where glaciers flow through temperate primeval rainforest to just 250 metres above sea level, Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers – on the South Island’s West Coast – are spectacular unique relics of the last Ice Age. One of the best ways to experience this glacial wonderland is on a heli-hike – a combination of an exhilarating helicopter flight to the upper reaches of the glacier followed by a guided walk amongst some of the most breathtaking terrain imaginable. Gaze in awe at the magnificent ice formations which include ice caves, pinnacles and crevasses – and witness the extraordinary colours of the ice-flow!
