Chinese temples, ancient shophouses and Indian spices
Penang is Malaysia’s living museum, an historic and multi-cultural town which boasts one of the largest collections of intact pre-war houses in the whole of Southeast Asia. Since her heyday at the height of the spice trading days, Penang has attracted traders from across the world, creating the fascinating blend of cultures that still remains today. A walking tour is the ideal way to explore this historic destination. Allow your specialist guide to reveal the secrets of Penang’s past and show you the best of the architecture which remains. Beginning with the museum, you will walk to the Kuan Yin temple. A Chinese temple dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, this is one of many faiths which are represented here in Penang. Sample some of the strong Indian influences with a visit to a sari and spice shop before exploring Little India and a Hindu temple. Continue on to Khoo Kongsi, a large Chinese clanhouse which is in the heart of the oldest part of the city, in the midst of narrow lanes and pre-war houses. Finish your exploration with a visit to St George’s Church, the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia, built from convict labour in 1816.
