A slice of authentic history, old-world KL and colonial architecture set in landscaped gardens, this is the ideal retreat for those who shun the high-rise luxury hotels in search of something unique and above all, different. Completed in 1904, Carcosa Seri Negara was originally constructed by one of Kuala Lumpur’s city founders and later became home to the British High Commissioner – Queen Elizabeth was once a guest. Today, the colonial history and elegant character of the property have been beautifully preserved. Each of the thirteen suites is different in size and décor but each one is sizeable – some feature separate lounge areas, others have dining rooms and some have terraces or verandas. All are decorated with antiques, rich fabrics and Oriental rugs without compromising on modern amenities such as minibar, television, DVD player and large marble bathtubs. The hotel has a swimming pool and is also renowned for afternoon tea and Sunday brunch. It is not only the opulence of the rooms which helps to create a sense that you are a guest of a distinguished statesman, but in so many other ways this is definitely not a hotel in the traditional sense. There is no reception area and guests are instead greeted on arrival by their personal butler and check-in is completed in their private suite. Its location on the outskirts of the city ensures that there is plenty of space and greenery around, ideal for those seeking to escape the buzz of the modern day KL.
