Situated on the banks of the Mekong River, just three hours North of Luang Prabang by boat, the Kamu Lodge is an unusual and welcoming tented camp. With only twenty tents and enthusiastic service, the camp has an intimate feel. The tents themselves are heavy duty canvas, with Lao style thatched roofs and permanent bathrooms. Inside, the tents are furnished with bamboo and wooden furniture, giving a rustic Lao feel, in keeping with your surroundings. They are fan-cooled and have a private terrace in front. Bathrooms have a solar-powered hot water shower and Western style toilets. In addition to some truly atmospheric accommodation, Kamu Lodge offers some very unique activities. Try your hand at rice planting or harvesting in the lush green rice paddies which surround the camp. Pan for gold on the banks of the Mekong, where tiny flecks of the mineral glint teasingly at you from the sand. Attempt to catch your own dinner with a spot of Mekong fishing using local techniques. Perhaps the most rewarding of all is to trek through the jungle scenery to visit cascading waterfalls or hilltribe villages. Part of the profit from the Kamu Lodge goes towards supporting the local ethnic minority villages, so visitors are always welcome.
