Ol Donyo Wuas lies in the foothills of the Chyulu range in Southern Kenya, halfway between the Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. After 21 years of operation this small intimate lodge has recently undergone a stunning process of re-invention – in 2008, the old lodge was knocked down and in its place now stands a brand new lodge which is receiving rave reviews. It has been recognised as a finalist in the 2009 Tourism for Tomorrow awards – and is proudly forming the core of a new, sustainable model for conservation which ensures protection of the wildlife through an innovative sharing-of-benefits scheme with the local community. Set on 275,000 acres of community-owned concession land, this luxury eco-lodge is enjoying its exciting new deign. The seven individual thatched cottages boast stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and each makes efficient use of solar powered lighting and solar heated showers. Most have their own private pool – and the lodge’s main horizon swimming pool looks out to Mount Kilimanjaro. Game drives and bush walks enable guests to enjoy the wildlife of the region whilst visits to remote Maasai villages offer an authentic cultural experience. Bush breakfasts on the plains under an acacia tree are always a delight – and ‘sleep-outs’ under the stars from the rooftop platforms above each bathroom guarantee lasting memories. Fly-camping in an overnight tented camp away from the lodge is a popular highlight – and for the more adventurous, horse riding safaris and mountain biking on the plains are also available. Ol Donyo Wuas is accessible via a scheduled flight (or a 55 minute private charter) from Nairobi.
