A secluded family-owned beach hideaway, Manda Bay is located on the north-western tip of Manda Island, one of the many idyllic islands to be found within the romantic Lamu archipelago off Kenya’s Swahili Coast. It lies in calm inshore waters on a long white sandy protected beach, with many fascinating creeks and small islets nearby just waiting to be discovered. An ideal ‘post-safari retreat’ for both families and couples alike, Manda Bay is particularly renowned for its attentive, yet discreet personal service, more often than not provided by the owners themselves. It is also just 20 minutes by boat from the fascinating ancient Arab town of Lamu, now a World Heritage site where you walk the narrow streets and follow in the footsteps of Sinbad the Sailor. In keeping with the surrounding landscape, the accommodation comprises of 16 Robinson Crusoe style cottages (11 Beachfront Cottages and 5 Sea View Cottages) constructed from local materials. The central dining room and bar overlook the beach – and there is also a fabulous ocean view swimming pool. The ocean naturally has an influence on the cuisine – with freshly caught tuna and mangrove crab brought in by local fishermen. The resort also has its own beautiful 60 foot traditional sailing dhow. Marine life abounds with sightings of dolphins (December to March) and even Humpback Whales (mainly in October). The warm, gentle and clear waters are perfect for snorkelling and swimming – and a variety of watersports including waterskiing, windsurfing and deep sea fishing are also available. Manda Bay is accessed via a daily flight from Nairobi to Lamu, followed by a 25 minute boat ride.
