Located in one of Kenya’s wildest and least visited National Parks, this beautiful lodge blends in to the rocky crags and hillside of its spectacular setting. ‘Kopje’ means ‘small hill’ – and this is the site of George Adamson’s original camp where he and Joy Adamson released Elsa, the orphaned lioness, back into the wild – the story made famous in the film ‘Born Free’. Your cottage (one of eight) is the ultimate ‘room with a view’ – open-fronted, built from stone with a thatched roof – and attended by a personal butler. The large beds are swathed in netting – and the baths or showers in the ensuite have been designed as features of the rocky hillside. Paved paths, lit by lanterns at night, lead to the open bar, lounge and dining room where the lodge’s homemade pasta and fresh salads are always a highlight. There is also an horizon swimming pool which looks out across the plains. Perfect for a family or two couples, Elsa’s Private House offers two ensuite bedrooms and a private horizon swimming pool – whilst the new 3-level Honeymoon Suite boasts an ensuite bedroom on the lower level, a sitting room in the middle and an open deck overlooking Meru at the top. For many years, Meru has been a well-kept secret amongst travellers – and still today, it remains well off the beaten track. You will enjoy guided walks and game drives without seeing any other vehicles. Bush breakfasts and sundowners amongst the silhouetted doum palms and baobab trees are also an integral part of the experience. Elsa’s enjoys a loyal following, with many guests returning year after year, captivated by its unique charm and stunning views over Meru’s untamed wilderness. Meru (north-east of Nairobi) is accessible via regular flights from Nairobi and the Masai Mara.
