Shompole

Shompole (pictures 1-4) is located in a private conservancy on the edge of the Nguruman Escarpment in Southern Kenya overlooking the vast plains and volcanic hills of the Great Rift Valley. Not only is it a fine example of eco-tourism, but its ‘freeform’ and contemporary design, which blends effortlessly with the rugged surroundings, is unlike any other in Kenya! Its international following was boosted after David Bailey did a fashion shoot here for Vogue in 2003. A joint venture between a private safari company and the local Maasai community, Shompole was constructed using only natural materials – and solar power is utilised for both electricity and water.

Spacious, white, pure and cool – Shompole’s eight open and stylish accommodation ‘structures’ are breathtakingly positioned to follow the contours of the escarpment. Each features an open-air shower, a spacious sitting area, a ‘bathroom with a view’, a plunge pool and an enormous bed!

This spectacular location in one of the most diverse environments in Kenya ensures that there is plenty to do! You can enjoy a walk with one of the Maasai guides, take an early morning game drive, visit Shompole village on market day or join an excursion to Lake Natron (a soda lake) to see the thousands of flamingos. The area abounds with plains game and elephants, whilst lion, leopard and cheetah also roam the open savannah. Mountain bikes are also available for guests' use.

Privacy, comfort and relaxation are prime objectives here – and for those seeking romance, candle-lit bush dinners can easily be arranged!

Perfect for honeymooners or couples seeking extra privacy, Little Shompole (pictures 5-7) is a gorgeous retreat offering two sensational private suites, located within a few minutes walk of the main Shompole Lodge – yet positioned with the utmost consideration for seclusion and exclusivity. Each of the suites has its own living area, plunge pool and spacious sundeck. Both suites share a stunning horizon pool. In addition, guests at Little Shompole enjoy a dedicated team of staff, a private guide for game viewing and full butler service.

Shompole is accessible via a short private charter flight (30mins) from Nairobi, the Mara or Amboseli.
