Stylish barefoot chic best describes this idyllic coastal retreat which nestles on the edge of the Indian Ocean on a deserted stretch of white sand beach on Kenya’s glorious coastline, some 30 miles north of Lamu Island. Remote and secluded, it overlooks a sheltered lagoon to the north of Kiwayu Island – and is renowned for its casual laid-back ambience which effortlessly combines with great food and simple luxury.

The lodge and its 18 traditional thatched bandas (cottages) are so well hidden amongst the sand dunes, that the beach (which is frequented by turtles) appears almost virginal but for the odd sun lounger. The open-sided bandas have been built in the local Swahili tradition with palm-thatched roofs and woven matting floors and walls. They are all set well apart, so complete privacy is assured. Each has a king bed draped with mosquito netting, a dressing room, ensuite with shower and a large verandah with hammocks, where the only sound you will hear is the lapping of the sea. The convivial bar and dining room are also built in the same local tradition.

Relaxation is the keynote – and you can while away lazy afternoons playing cards, backgammon or reading – but if you do insist on being active, Kiwayu Bay is ideal for wind surfing or sailing one of the laser boats. You can also go snorkelling and creek fishing – or try water-skiing in the sheltered mangrove channels. Dhow excursions, foot safaris over the dunes, boat trips to the old town of Lamu and romantic picnics in deserted coves are also available.

There are daily flights from Nairobi via Lamu to the local Kiwayu airstrip, from where it is a short 10 minute ride over the dunes to the lodge.

PRICES

Prices from £190 per person twin share including all meals, some activities and transfers from the Kiwayu airstrip. Closed mid-April to mid-July.
