Located on the southern tip of fabled Lamu Island, Kipungani offers an idyllic desert island escape -where barefoot luxury meets ancient Swahili life. A 90 minute flight from Nairobi, followed by a 30 minute speedboat trip, Kipungani (which means 'place of fresh air' in Swahili), sits perched on the edge of Kipungani Bay where the protected mangroves of Kipungani Creek meet the ocean -and the start of a deserted 14 kilometre white sand beach. The mangrove creeks are inhabited by schools of barracuda, dolphins play in the Kanyika Reef and green turtles lay their eggs in the soft sands. This is an ecotourist's paradise, where accommodation is provided in fourteen 'bandas' (or beachfront grass cottages) constructed entirely from local reeds and thatch and cooled by the sea breezes. Each has a large kingsize double bed draped in mosquito netting, a private ocean-facing verandah and an ensuite with shower and flush toilet - your shower will be as 'naturally warm' as the air temperature. Kipungani also offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a coastal culture which has remained unchanged for centuries. The people of neighbouring Kipungani Village will show you their ancient boat-building and mat-weaving techniques or take you fishing and prawn-netting. The property has a saltwater swimming pool, a thatched bar and lounge area and an ocean facing dining room where you will enjoy delectable 'catch-of-the-day' seafood - all meals are included in your stay. A variety of watersports are available including snorkelling and diving, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, kayaking, creek and ocean sailing and day trips on Kipungani's 35 foot Arab dhow. Visits to Lamu's 14th century mosques and day trips to the ruined settlements and forts of nearby Manda Island can also be arranged.
