High Road to Akaroa

A unique 4WD trip to the French harbourside settlement of Akaroa

Take the high, back country road from Christchurch to the quaint French harbourside settlement of Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula – on this private 4WD tour with ‘Canterbury Trails’.

The high summit route provides spectacular views of Akaroa Harbour, the Canterbury Plains, the distant Southern Alps, remote bays and rolling farmland. After a dramatic drive along the crater rim (the Banks Peninsula was formed by the violent eruption of two ancient volcanoes), you will descend into the crater and wind your way to Akaroa.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of Akaroa’s cafés, and then take to the water for a swim with the Hector Dolphins – one of the world’s smallest and rarest dolphins, found only around the coast of New Zealand. Alternatively, enjoy a two hour harbour cruise and admire the stunning scenery and wildlife (including dolphins and penguins) –whilst learning about Akaroa’s fascinating past. On your return, you will take the quicker and more usual route back to Christchurch, with a stop at a cheese factory enroute for a tasting.

‘Canterbury Trails’ also operate day trips from Christchurch to the Arthur’s Pass National Park, with plenty of time for guided walks amidst the breathtaking scenery (this can also be combined with the TranzAlpine train in one direction). A unique day combining the whales of Kaikoura with the thermal pools of Hanmer Springs is available too.
