Discover the beauty of ancient Thailand

Days 1 - 3  Exploring Bangkok

The ‘City of Angels’ is surely one of Asia’s greatest cities. First time visitors to Thailand may wish to visit some of the more well known highlights of the city, including the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) or lively Chinatown. Those who wish to experience the city on a deeper level may even prefer to discover the city’s canals by long tail boat, an unseen side of Bangkok. Alternatively, relax and explore the city’s nightlife, fine dining, world class shopping or day spas.

Day 4  Kanchanaburi and the River Kwai

Leaving Bangkok by road, head out to the lush green countryside which surrounds Kanchanaburi. Visit Hellfire Pass and the newly built museum, a moving and fascinating memorial to those who gave their lives building the infamous Death Railway during the Second World War. This afternoon, you will have the opportunity to ride a section of this infamous railway, ending in Kanchanaburi town itself. Overnight here or for those who prefer some adventure, in a simple floating hotel on the River Kwai.

Days 5 - 6  Ayuthaya & Sukhothai

Continue by road to Ayuthaya, once the capital of powerful Siam. Renowned chiefly for its beautiful temples dating back hundreds of years, Ayuthaya is a pleasant riverside town and you will explore some of the ruined temples, the interesting museum and other famous sights, including the Buddha head which has been framed by a bodhi tree. Continue by road to the thirteenth century Thai capital of Sukhothai. You may wish to explore the striking and dramatic ruins by bicycle, a pleasant way to navigate the historical park.

Days 7 - 9  Chiang Mai

Take a morning flight up to Chiang Mai and explore a wide variety of exquisite temples, including the hilltop Doi Suthep, a highlight of the city. Barter and buy at the bustling nightmarket, indulge in cookery or even massage lessons. Those interested in hilltribe culture may wish to visit the fascinating museum, or take a light trek to a nearby village.

Day 10  Lisu Lodge

Depart Chiang Mai and head to the rustic but charming Lisu Lodge, run by members of the ethnic minority group, the Lisu. This colourful lodge will be your home for one night and is an excellent base for activities as well as being a fantastic opportunity to truly experience more of the Lisu culture, through village walks, talking to the village shaman, singing and dancing, or a visit to the ‘village cultural centre’.

Days 11 - 12  Golden Triangle

After lunch, depart from Lisu Lodge and continue onto the Golden Triangle. This beautiful and mysterious area is where the borders of Northern Thailand meet Laos and Myanmar (Burma). The following day, explore this fascinating area including a visit to the captivating Hall of Opium Museum, a project set up by Thailand’s beloved late Queen Mother. You may wish to explore the area deeper either on foot or by elephant.

Day 13  Onward Journey

Continue your journey with a flight from nearby Chiang Rai to Bangkok and on to any of Thailand’s beach resorts.
