Laos has a long history of textiles and weaving, visible in the beautiful sarongs which the local women wear and in rich wall-hangings or silks. This experience will not only improve your knowledge but will also help Laos to preserve its weaving history and provide income and training for village women. You will either visit the Phaeng Mai Gallery or the Houey Hong Vocational Textile Training Centre for Women. Here you will learn about the history, styles and processes of weaving – from harvesting the silk, the dying process and the pattern making to the weaving itself. Visit the work areas to view each stage and if you wish, you can work the loom and experience the weaving process first hand, thus appreciating the high levels of skill and energy required for this craft.
