Visit the mysterious Plain of Jars and see off the beaten track Laos
For those who wish to see more of Laos, a side trip to the Plain of Jars is an ideal way to combine adventure, history and mystery. A short 40 minute flight from Vientiane, the Xieng Khouang Plain is situated in the Lao highlands, near to the border with Vietnam. Set in this misty and mountainous plain are several sites where thousands of ancient stone jars can be found, thought to date back up to two thousand years. Archaeologists believe the large jars were used by an ancient tribe for burial purposes or storing food but much mystery and legend still exists concerning the use of the jars, the unknown race who created them and artefacts found in or near the jars. Accommodation is relatively basic but this remains a fascinating one night two day trip into this unexplored region.
