Kalimantan, Borneo

Kalimantan is located in Indonesian Borneo and is the place to visit for those seeking immersion in untouched nature, remote villages and tribes and of course to view the elusive orangutan. Vast rivers cut through the pristine jungle, providing exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife on board local riverboats.

Tanjung Putting National Park

Access is by flying into Pangkalan Bun airport from either Semarang or Jakarta in nearby Java, on arrival guests are transferred to a traditional riverboat called a Klotok, which they stay overnight on, and journey along the Sekonyer River into Tanjung Putting National Park. Established as a national park in 1982 and composed of more than 400,000 hectares of mangrove swamp, rainforest and dense jungle, the park is home to a great number of primates and more than 600 species of bird. With local guides visitors search for orangutans and proboscis monkeys, as well as other species of animals and birds that call the rainforest their home.

Orangutan Experience

Established in 1971, Camp Leaky is a renowned orangutan research and rehabilitation centre located in the heart of the national park, and is one of the highlights of any trip to Kalimantan. Founded originally as a research centre, over the years the camp has expended and now focusses on conservation and rehabilitation, as well as continuing to carry out important work. On the cruise you will meet some of the local rangers while witnessing the daily feeding of the orangutan.
