Located on the banks of the Hau River (a tributary of the mighty Mekong River), the Victoria Can Tho is at the heart of the Mekong Delta. Although a newly built hotel, it has been constructed in the style of an elegant colonial mansion. The c-shaped resort has a pool at its centre, which overlooks the river itself. The river is, of course, a hub of activity for the local people. Boats of all shapes and sizes carry all manner of goods upstream towards Saigon or downstream towards Cambodia and it is possible to enjoy a massage in an outdoor sala, whilst observing the frenetic bustle going on along the river. Situated slightly outside of Can Tho town, the Victoria has more of a resort feel and is set in picturesque tropical gardens. The 92 rooms are decorated with a stylish, understated feel –wooden flooring and classic cream furnishings are all part of the hotel’s look. All rooms have a balcony, although not all have river views. The Victoria is passionate about Vietnamese culture and as such, the rooms feature traditional artefacts and there are often demonstrations by local artisans in the lobby of the hotel. The Spices Restaurant offers fine dining and Cuu Long bar serves a selection of high quality drinks. One of the hotel’s best features is the Lady Hau boat, a typical wooden Vietnamese vessel on which it is possible to take a sunrise cruise on the Delta to see the fascinating early morning floating markets.
