One of Bangkok’s true hidden gems, the Eugenia is a 19th century colonial style villa, lovingly restored by its owner to provide 12 intimate suites for discerning travellers. The theme of the hotel was inspired by a gracious and chic 83 year old Vietnamese lady – a friend of the owner and whose sophistication and understated style he so admired.

The décor of the hotel is dramatic and opulent –animal skins lay across leather wing back chairs, four poster beds and hand beaten copper bathtubs decorate the rooms and all of the furniture and fittings are vintage. The antiques are from the owner’s personal collection and come from Burma, India and Indochina. Some of the suites have limited space due to the nature of this original building, but attention to detail more than makes up for this. Even the nightly turn down service includes lighting a jasmine scented candle in your room.

The lobby, café, library and lounge are on the ground floor, whilst the rooms are on the second and third floors of this character building. In the rear courtyard, there is a small swimming pool and Thai sala. For guests who wish to explore Bangkok in style, the hotel has an eclectic vintage fleet, including and S type Jaguar, a 1970’s Daimler limousine and a post-war Mercedes.

This is a must for those seeking an experience totally different from that of staying in a large hotel. As the Eugenia themselves say, it is not a hotel, it’s a home!
