Where better to wash off the dust after a safari in the Selous or the Serengeti than this intimate haven on the shores of the Indian Ocean? Just a 10 minute light aircraft flight south of Dar es Salaam (or 45 minutes by road followed by a local ferry crossing), Ras Kutani sits on a crescent of white sand with a freshwater lagoon on one side, the breaking surf of the Indian Ocean on the other and rainforest behind. The experience begins on arrival at the airstrip where you will be transported to an awaiting rowing boat for the short journey across the lagoon to the welcoming jetty of this unique coastal gem.

Undoubtedly one of Tanzania’s best beach hideaways, this is ‘barefoot rustic chic’ at its relaxing and romantic best. Wooden walkways lead through the trees to each of the 9 thatched bandas (cottages) which are tucked away under the swaying palms with Swahili daybeds and a hammock or two swinging on the shady verandah.

Set high up on the hill with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, the four Upepo Suites (a more recent addition) offer an idyllic sanctuary for the safari-weary traveller seeking castaway comfort. Each comes with its own signature Sultan’s bed and a private plunge pool.

The open-plan bar and dining area are liberally furnished with colourful cushions – cards, backgammon and chess are about as stressful as it gets here! Relaxation is the keynote – but a long beach walk provides the opportunity to savour the enchantment of this fascinating shoreline which is redolent with Africa's history. The service is impeccable – and the food fabulous. Fresh seafood straight from the ocean and succulent Pan African cuisine are the order of the day.
