Mnemba Island is an untouched atoll - a tiny piece of heavenly paradise just 15 minutes by boat from Zanzibar. Chosen as one of the three most romantic destinations in the world by Condé Nast Traveller, this heart-shaped island of palms and whistling pines is ringed by an unspoiled strip of beach amidst the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

Mnemba Island Lodge comprises ten secluded ensuite bungalows - or 'bandas' - overlooking the beach. Bordered by tropical forests on three sides, the exquisite bandas, in keeping with Mnemba’s Robinson-Crusoe style, have been hand-woven and thatched from pine branches and traditional Zanzibari palm-matting, allowing the cool sea breezes to waft through. A palm-covered walkway leads from each room to a bathroom in the woods - complete with rain shower, natural products and fluffy towels.

The dining area and adjoining bar is unhindered by walls or windows. Baskets of tropical fruit, lobsters and fresh fish are sailed into Mnemba daily on traditional ngalawa outriggers - adding to the island’s castaway-feel. Mouth-watering cuisine consisting of exotic delicacies is lavishly prepared and more often that not, served alfresco under the stars with the waves gently lapping at your feet.

The calm warm seas around Mnemba are nothing short of a giant aquatic playground, providing unsurpassed visibility for snorkelling and diving. Spend time alternating between the daybeds on your front porch and the sun-shaded loungers on your stretch of beach and at sunset, pick up your kerosene lamp and wander along the beach to dinner…
