The second largest atoll in the Tuamotus, Fakarava is one of Polynesia’s stunning undiscovered gems and it is also a renowned paradise for divers and snorkellers. Arriving on Fakarava (a 11/2 hour flight from Papeete) is like stepping into an old South Seas novel where romance and adventure mix with warm turquoise waters and swaying coconut palms. Fakarava’s ‘powder’ white sand beaches fringe an immense lagoon dotted with pearl farms and small islets where colonies of nesting birds have made their home. The beautiful rectangular-shaped lagoon (roughly 60kms long by 25kms wide) is just teeming with marine life and a number of dive sites still lie virtually untouched. Nestled on a beautiful white sand beach, just south of the main village of Rotoava, this 30 bungalow retreat is Fakarava’s first and only ‘hotel’ and great care has been taken with the design so as to ensure it blends in with its pristine natural surroundings. Each spacious bungalow has an ensuite bathroom with shower – and is cooled with a ceiling fan and the gentle sea breezes. All bungalows are identical except for their location. The resort has a restaurant and bar – and breakfast and dinner are included in your stay. Snorkelling, diving, visits to pearl farms and picnics on idyllic motus are the order of the day and it’s also worth visiting the historic village of Tetamanu – home to one of the first Catholic churches to have been built in coral.
