About 3 hours north west of Johannesburg, the pristine malaria-free wilderness of the Waterberg Plateau – which runs along the northern border of South Africa, straddling Botswana and Zimbabwe – has been the home of the Baber family since the late 1800’s, and it is here that these two exquisite bush homes – Ant’s Nest (pictures 4 & 5) and Ant’s Hill (pictures 1-3) – have been built by husband and wife team, Ant and Tessa Baber, on adjoining private game reserves.

The Waterberg’s wild and varying landscape – wide open savannah plains surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges – provides the ideal conditions for a fascinating variety of big game species – including giraffe, buffalo, white rhino, nyala, eland and the rare sable antelope, not to mention over 300 species of birds.

Ant’s Nest (which can only be booked on an exclusive use basis) is personally hosted by Ant and Tessa who are renowned for lavishing guests with good old-fashioned ‘family-style’ hospitality. Decorated by Tessa, who grew up in Kenya, this original homestead, with its wide verandahs, exudes a classic African ambience with furniture crafted out of timber and stone. A plunge pool blends naturally into the surroundings – and a watering hole, located in front of the property, is often frequented by a variety of game. The three double bedrooms (with four-poster beds) and one twin room comfortably cater for a small group of friends or family (up to a maximum of 10 guests can be accommodated).

Ant’s Hill (picture 1) shares the same ethos and spirit as Ant's Nest. It is an architectural gem perched on one of the highest hills in the Waterberg and has been lovingly designed by Ant himself. The lodge sits on a ridge next to a waterfall, and overlooks a beautiful gorge. The view is awe-inspiring with the plains and hills stretching far out onto the horizon – and only natural stone and the best local materials have been used in its construction. Vibrant prints and creatively designed furniture from Kenya add a unique touch of style, reminiscent of an old Kenyan bush home. The bedrooms are spacious and each bathroom boasts a sunken bath and waterfall shower. The property comprises two honeymoon chalets (situated away from the main house) and a two-bedroomed family cottage. Another luxurious bedroom with a private verandah is located in the main house. Ant’s Hill can either be booked on an exclusive use basis (catering for up to 12 guests in total) – or a room can be booked individually.

The reserves each offer a safe and secluded environment for guests of all ages to not only enjoy game drives, but also guided bush walks, cycling – and perhaps most significantly, horse riding – which many believe provides the best opportunity for the greatest game viewing experience in the African bush. Each lodge has a number of excellent well-schooled horses made up of big thoroughbreds and Arab-boerperd crosses – and all riding capabilities are catered for (including ponies for children). Special activities are laid-on for those children and teenagers who are keen to gain an understanding of the running of a game reserve – and for any adults interested, Ant’s father will gladly provide a fascinating insight into the area’s history.
