This unique forest retreat enjoys a superb location tucked away high up in a private woodland, overlooking the Knysna lagoon. Ingeniously designed using only sustainable building materials, Phantom Forest exudes an overwhelming sense of calm and tranquillity. Here, you will even find a ‘Body Boma’ – a vitality retreat on the edge of the forest offering heavenly treatments which promise to pamper both mind and body! Suspended on tall stilts in the jungle canopy and connected by a series of meandering boardwalks, each of the 14 eco-chic ‘tree-houses’ is exquisitely adorned and comprises a spacious sitting room, a bedroom, a private deck and a sensuous bathroom housed under a glass roof, ensuring glorious views of the night sky. The décor embraces the use of simple local materials – hand-woven carpets, cane partitions, animal-skin rugs, ethnic prints, wirelamps and wood-beamed ceilings – to provide an authentic African feel. The dining experience at Phantom Forest surpasses all culinary expectations with a sensational 6-course menu prepared by a local trio of chefs. Dinner is followed by coffee and liqueur, which can be enjoyed around a burning fire, often accompanied by the rhythmic beating of African drums. Guests also have the option of feasting at the Chutzpah restaurant (picture 4) where North African fare combines with a Moroccan-inspired ambience. If you’re feeling adventurous, slip into a canoe with a picnic lunch and drift down the river – or take a hike along the nature trail which winds through the heart of the forest. Should all this prove too demanding, you can just laze by the freshwater pool or head for a sauna and a relaxing soak in the Bubble Barrel – an outdoor hot tub ‘just for two’ with evocative views over the lagoon and river estuary!
