Addo Elephant National Park, 40 minutes drive from Port Elizabeth, was once the Route of Giants – the ancient elephant migratory trail. Today, Addo houses the densest elephant population in the world. The concept behind staying at Gorah, a private concession within Addo, is that there are no boundaries between you and the animals, bar the canvas of your luxury tent!

The original homestead, known as Gorah House, has been wonderfully restored to its 19th century colonial splendour – whilst the 11 tented suites nestle under thatched canopies.

Owned by the Hunter family, Gorah retains a magical ‘family-run’ ambience and delivers meticulous service and attention to detail.

As the sky turns to dusk, the solar-powered camp becomes aglow with swinging lantern lights, reminiscent of a wildly romantic colonial safari. The 11 spacious and luxurious tented suites recall the golden era of safari in the early 1900's – with their gleaming wooden floors and draped four-poster beds.

Life on Gorah’s plains is ruled by the animals – you will awaken to the sounds of the bush and as you unzip your tent, you are likely to be greeted by yet another glorious day – and possibly a herd of zebra going about their daily business!

Breakfast is a decadent affair overlooking the waterhole, whilst in the evenings, dining by candlelight in the elegant dining room is often followed by a fascinating night drive to spot the nocturnal animals... and before retreating to your tented enclave, sit back on the deep verandah and watch the splashing of water as the animals arrive for a drink in the moonlight.
