Situated high on the slopes of Table Mountain, this chic urban sanctuary is the result of a wonderful transformation of a charming provincial monument built in 1903. Its owner, David Shorrock, turned his back on a career in investment banking so that he could build the guesthouse of his dreams… and with careful planning, David and his team have sensitively restored a listed building and transformed it into a stylish boutique hotel with a contemporary feel.

Inside, you'll find a sun-filled lounge with French windows leading to the patio, a breakfast room with sleek wooden furniture, and eight colourful and lavishly appointed bedrooms - one of which is housed in a separate cottage in the lavender-filled gardens. The room interiors boast a subtle, yet distinctly African flavour – and all are wonderfully light and airy thanks to muted cream walls and fabric window blinds. Cushions, canvas oil prints, ‘wire’ and ‘beaded’ local sculptures add splashes of colour – and if you like what you see – you can even purchase some of the artwork! Each spacious ensuite room has enormous windows (particularly in the showers) with spectacular views – either looking out through the ancient oaks to Lion’s Head, or peeking over rooftops to the sprawling city. Fine cotton percale linen, fluffy bathrobes and under-floor heating all contribute to the feeling of indulgence and well-being.

But Four Rosmead is not just a feast for the eyes… breakfast is a sumptuous affair and vibrant Kloof Street, with its myriad of restaurants, cafés and bars is only a 10-minute walk down the hill.

If you don’t fancy venturing too far, you can laze by the pool, or amble along the gravel paths of the Mediterranean garden… soothed by the scent of lavender, and the rustle of the bay trees.
