Denis Island

Family-owned, Denis’ charm lies in its intimate service and seclusion. It also has many secret treasures waiting to be uncovered. The island lies at the very edge of the Seychelles Bank – where the ocean plunges thousands of feet – so it’s no surprise that Denis is renowned for its world class deep sea game fishing and superb snorkelling and diving. In fact, it is ranked one of the finest areas for diving in the Seychelles and there is a small dive centre on the island. Meandering pathways lead through the lush greenery – and the natural lagoons provide sheltered swimming and year round watersports including sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Giant tortoises and turtles still inhabit this quiet undisturbed sanctuary – and you will also see an abundance of nesting birds.

Your private beachside retreat is one of 25 thatched and elegant cottages which are spread across the beach area on the north-western tip of the island. Each has a large four poster bed, its own sea-facing verandah and a courtyard with an outdoor shower for cooling off under the galaxy of stars. The cottages are dotted amidst the coconut trees on either side of the main lodge. Honeymooners, or those looking for that little extra privacy, will love the ‘Villa Bois d’Argent’ which boasts 325 square metres of space with a separate living area, whilst the two bedroomed ‘Villa Prince Noir’ is ideal for a family.

Food is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Denis experience. Daily catches of fresh fish, home-grown ingredients from the vegetable garden and exotic tropical fruits – all combine to create a wonderful mélange of Creole flavours. Following a recent refurbishment, there is now a wine cellar, a show kitchen – and a swimming pool.

Denis also has an ancient lighthouse and an old vanilla plantation. It is a small island – and there’s just no denying that from the moment you land, you will be captivated by its irresistibly calming ambience. Denis is accessible via a 30 minute flight (daily except Wednesdays) from Mahé.
