Accessible via a magical 30 minute seaplane transfer from Townsville, this coral fringed island hideaway sits within its own pristine national park amidst one of the world’s greatest natural wonders - the Great Barrier Reef.

From the moment you land on the glistening turquoise waters, you will feel the pressures of modern day life slip away. Orpheus caters for a maximum of just 42 guests in stylish accommodation which is spread along the beachfront. There are 17 studio-style Orpheus Retreat rooms with a private patio and ensuite spa bath - and 4 Nautilus Suites, which offer a larger patio and separate bedroom and living area (the suites also have an ensuite spa bath). All accommodation has both air-conditioning and a ceiling fan, a king-size bed and a CD player with a small selection of music.

Romantic couples and honeymooners can be assured of peace and tranquility - there are no telephones or televisions - and children under 15 years are not permitted.

If you insist on being active, the options on Orpheus are plentiful. The island certainly lives up to its namesake - the unbelievably blue waters around Orpheus boast an abundance of tropical fish and coral, just perfect for snorkelling - or you can board the custom-built glass bottom boat for a coral-viewing cruise with the marine biologist. You can also explore the island’s mangrove ecosystem in a 2-person kayak - join a guided walk for an introduction to the island’s flora and fauna - or at night, go ‘star-gazing’ with a guide to learn about the constellations of the southern skies.

Scuba diving on the outer reef can be arranged - or you can take a motorised dinghy to one of the island’s many secluded bays for a romantic picnic lunch on a deserted sheltered beach. Of course, doing nothing but lazing in a hammock is also part of the experience! Other facilities include a tennis court, two swimming pools and a gym.

Dining on Orpheus is undoubtedly one of the highlights - and the cuisine is enhanced by the relaxed open-air setting of the restaurant which enjoys wonderful views across the ocean. The chef prepares a new menu daily with an emphasis on fresh seafood. All meals are included – and dinner is a seven course dégustation affair, so be prepared for gastronomic indulgence!

PRICES

Prices from £318 per person per night in an Orpheus Retreat Room, including all meals and most activities.

Flights to Australia vary in price considerably depending on date of departure though there are always good deals on quality airlines. Fares on Qantas/British Airways, for example can start from as little as £699 including taxes and fuel surcharges.

From April 2008, Qantas will be introducing its all-new Premium Economy cabin. With dedicated check in, 40" seat pitch, extra width and enhanced meal service, all this extra luxury comes at a suprisingly low upgrade cost. Please ask your sales consultant for more details.
