For those looking for a honeymoon escape packed with culture, look no further than Vanuatu. Located in the South Pacific, this archipelago of 83 islands is home to towering volcanoes, lush rainforest, coral atolls, sandy beaches and the happiest people in the world!
We highly recommend splitting your Vanuatu honeymoon between the two islands of Efate and Tanna (the other islands only have very basic accommodation). Efate is home to the international airport, the capital Port Vila with its colourful markets and fabulous restaurants as well as some wonderful honeymoon retreats (Iririki Island Resort and Breakas Beach Resort are perfect honeymoon options), sandy beaches and pristine waterfalls!
A ‘must’ on a honeymoon to Vanuatu is to visit the island of Tanna, an hour’s flight south of Efate. Steeped in tradition and culture, this fascinating island is home to custom villages living wonderfully happily and simply in their traditional ways, uninfluenced by Western culture. A visit to one of these villages to meet these friendly people, learn how they live and witness (and even join in!) their traditional dance will undoubtedly be a highlight of your visit to Vanuatu. Another major draw of Tanna is the mighty Mt Yasur volcano, the world’s most accessible live volcano, where visitors can go on a 4WD safari to witness an amazing natural night show! Culture and volcanoes aside, Tanna also boasts sandy beaches and wonderful snorkelling spots, so it is well worth setting some time aside to simply relax too! The best place to stay on Tanna is White Grass Ocean Resort, a simple yet delightful property perfectly set up for exploring the island.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Vanuatu – access is from Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland or Nadi (Fiji). May to October is the dry season and therefore the best time of year to honeymoon in Vanuatu. Higher humidity and tropical rains can be expected at other times.
