Whilst the name Tahiti is commonly incorrectly used to describe the whole of French Polynesia, it is in fact, merely the largest island, home to the international airport and the capital, Papeete.
The island's mountainous interior shelters deep valleys, clear streams and high waterfalls. As Tahiti does not have any natural white sand beaches, there is a tendancy to use it as a first or last night stop before heading to the outer islands.
