North of Johannesburg, close to the Botswana border, the 75,000 hectare malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Famous for the largest movement of animals since Noah filled his Ark – the ambitious re-stocking programme, ‘Operation Phoenix’, which took place in the early nineties – the reserve is also a major source of livelihood for communities living in the area. The region boasts archaeological discoveries that go back to the beginnings of humankind and is renowned for its fantastic bird-life and wide-open African skies.
Home to 10,000 head of game, including the ‘big five’, the Madikwe offers superlative game viewing of predators, as well as abundant plains game, spotted hyena and the rare and fascinating wild dog.
